Applying for Kindergarten

When To Apply for Kindergarten

Children should be five years old by December 31 of the year of entry into the Schechter Westchester kindergarten class. Applications are accepted beginning June 15, or 18 months before your child enters kindergarten.

Applying to Schechter Westchester Lower School includes several components. Please be sure to complete the requirements so that your application will be given full consideration. We are here to help you through the process, so please contact Director of Lower School Admissions Diana Schutt, 914-948-3111, ext. 4370 with any questions or concerns. We look forward to speaking with you.

Step 1: The Inquiry

Interested families should contact the Lower School Admissions Office at 914-948-3111, ext. 4370, email Lower School Admissions, or complete the online inquiry form to arrange for a tour of our campus and to receive an admissions packet.

Step 2: The Tour

We encourage parents to take a campus tour during the school day to see the students learning, the teachers teaching, and to be able to meet our Lower School Principal and other members of the Educational Leadership team. Please allow 90 minutes for the tour and so that we may answer any questions you may have and get to know you.

Step 3: Application

Parent or guardian should complete the online application along with the $105 non-refundable application fee (also online) and submit as soon as possible.

Step 4: Release of Information Form

Please print out and sign a Release of Information form and bring or mail it, along with any independent evaluation reports, to the following address:

Step 5: Beyond the Application

Upon receipt of the Release of Information form, Schechter Westchester will contact your child’s early childhood director and/or teachers to obtain a report about your child. Beginning in December, we will call you to schedule a screening and kindergarten visit for your child at the Lower School. Visits take place throughout January, February, and March.

Once we have received the early childhood school report, and following your child’s screening and visit, we will contact you with an acceptance decision.

Applying for Grades 1-5

When to Apply for Grades 1-5

Applications for Grades 1 – 5 may be submitted at any time.

Step 4: Receipt of Records and the Interview

Once we have received the completed application and all supporting records for your child, we will call you to schedule an interview for your child at our Lower School campus. As part of the process, we require a signed Release for School Records, current report card, final report card from past two years, as well as evaluations, reports, and/or testing, if applicable.

Following your child’s interview, we will contact you with an acceptance decision.

Applying for Grades 6-8

When to Apply for Grades 6-8

Middle School applications must be submitted by January 2, 2018 to receive priority consideration.

Applying to Schechter Westchester Middle School includes several components. Please be sure to complete the requirements so that your application will be given full consideration.

Step 1: The Inquiry

Families are encouraged to attend our Sunday Middle School Open House on December 3, 2017 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Alternatively, please contact the Upper School Admissions Office at 914-948-8333, ext. 8110, to arrange for a private tour of the Upper School campus or complete the online inquiry form to let us know of your interest.

Step 2: Application

Parent or guardian should complete the online application and the $105 non-refundable application fee and submit as soon as possible but no later than January 2, 2018.

Step 3: Teacher and Administrator Recommendations

Print the applicant's name on each teacher recommendation form:

Step 4: Transcript and Release for School Records

We require two previous years of report cards and the report card from the current year. If these grades are not yet available they should be sent separately as soon as possible.

Please submit this signed release to our admissions office and this release to your child's current school.

With the release to the current school, be sure to include stamped envelopes addressed to:

All forms should be returned to us directly from the school.

Step 5: Standardized Achievement Tests

Schechter Westchester requires all applicants to have standardized achievement test results that are no more than three years old. Students may submit scores from any of the following tests: ISEE, SSAT, Terra Nova, CPT, IOWA, Stanfords, Connecticut Mastery, and California Achievement. Additional testing is required as part of the application for those students have taken the New York State ELA and Math exams. If you have any questions about your child’s standardized achievement testing, or to find a testing site, please feel free to contact the Office of Admissions at 914-948-8333.

Step 6: The Interview

All applicants and their parents must meet with the Director of Admissions and the Middle School psychologist for on-campus interviews. We will call you to schedule the interviews when your file is complete. We look forward to meeting you!

Applying for Grades 9-12

When to Apply for Grades 9-12

High School applications must be received by Tuesday, January 2, 2018 to receive priority consideration.

Applying to Schechter Westchester High School includes several components. Please be sure to complete the requirements so that your application will be given full consideration.

Note: Current Schechter Westchester students need not apply for admissions to Schechter Westchester High School.

Step 1: The Inquiry

Families are encouraged to attend our High School Open House on Sunday, October 29, 2017 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Alternatively, please contact the Upper School Admissions Office at 914-948-8333, ext. 8110, to arrange for a private tour of the Upper School campus or complete the online inquiry form to let us know of your interest.

Step 2: Parent Application

Parent or guardian should complete the online Parent Application and the $105 non-refundable application fee and submit as soon as possible but no later than Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

Step 3: Student Application

The applicant should complete the online Student Application as soon as possible but no later than Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

Step 4: Teacher and Administrator Recommendations

Step 7: The Interview

Once we have received a completed application, including all of the material listed above, we will call you to schedule the required on-campus interview. All applicants and their parents will meet with the Director of Admissions and members of the admissions team.

All applicants are also required to spend time in the High School shadowing a current student ambassador. The shadow visits allow applicants to better understand the academic experience and student life at Schechter Westchester. The Admissions Office matches each applicant with a student ambassador to create a comfortable visit.

Merit Scholar

Thank you for your interest in Schechter Westchester High School and our Akiva/Merit Scholar Program for incoming High School students with no day school background.

When to Apply

Merit Scholarship applications must be received by Tuesday, January 2, 2018 to receive priority consideration.

Applying to Schechter Westchester High School includes several components. Please be sure to complete the requirements so that your application will be given full consideration.

Families should contact the Upper School Admissions Office at 914-948-8333, ext. 8110 or complete the online inquiry form to arrange for a tour of the Upper School campus and to receive an admissions packet.

Step 2: Parent Application

Parent or guardian should complete the online Parent Application and the $105 non-refundable application fee and submit as soon as possible but no later than Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

Step 3: Student Application

The applicant should complete the online Student Application as well as the Supplemental Question as soon as possible but no later than Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

Step 4: Recommendations

Print the applicant's name on each form:

Additionally, a written personal recommendation in support of this student's application for the Akiva Merit Scholarship must be submitted by an adult other than your parent.
