Lessons in Acceptance and Kindness at the Lower School
Posted 11/01/2017 10:06AM

Fifth-grade students have been captivated in their literacy class with the book, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. The book is based on a real-world encounter between the author's son and a patient born with Treacher Collins Syndrome, which is characterized by differences in physical features such as eyes, ears, and cheekbones. In order to apply their learning to real-world situations, the students had an opportunity to hear about the organization MyFace. This organization is devoted to providing access to treatment and care for individuals with craniofacial conditions. The presentation facilitated a meaningful dialogue about being an ally for others, showing empathy, and choosing kindness.
